Hosta 'Cross Stitch'
A fascinating and exceptionally rare historic collector's plant registered by hybridizers Bill Zumbar and Pete Ruh in 1992, this medium-to-large cultivar gets constant notice from anyone touring premium shade collections. Developed out of a mysterious cross of unnamed seedlings "T4401" and "T4402", it features massive, semi-glossy pale green leaves that form a beautifully flattened, dramatic mound. What makes this plant completely unique—and gives it its legendary name—are the highly unusual, evenly spaced, pronounced "cross-stitch" ridges that run perfectly along each distinct leaf vein, creating a beautifully stitched textural marvel unlike any other variety in existence.
In mid-to-late summer, robust scapes rise cleanly above the satin-sheen foliage mound, bearing dense clusters of flaring, showy lavender flowers that provide an airy, striking contrast to the cupped and slightly rippled leaves below.
Maturing to a perfectly balanced 17 inches tall and spreading up to 37 inches wide, it acts as a rapid-growing and structurally dominant specimen that completely transforms quiet, dim corners of the garden. Remarkably hardy across Zones 3–9, its heavy, cupped leaves feature a highly reflective glossy backing, giving the architectural plant superb multi-angle appeal as it matures over the seasons.
Pair this stunning cultivar with premium companion plants from our collection, like the unique, dark foliage of Astilbe 'Dark Side of the Moon' or the brilliant structural fronds of the 'Brilliance' Autumn Fern to build a deeply layered, vibrant shade vignette.
Info: Our plants are grown in 5.25 x 5.25 x 5.25 inch pots and develop large root systems. These are not a small liner but a plant you can put right into your garden. That means you will get a bigger plant right away compared to a starter plant. We guarantee you will get a true to type healthy plant that you will love for years. If you have any problems or questions we are happy to help. During early spring plants may still be breaking dormancy so they may appear smaller than they will be when they fully leaf out. In Fall or Winter the plants may be dormant which means the may be losing or have completely lost their leaves.
Shipping: We do not ship to Hawaii or Alaska due to cost and import restrictions. Plants will be removed from their pots and loose soil removed and the rootball placed in a bag. We are an inspected nursery from the VA Dept of AG.
